Charlotte Sun Features David Klein, MD ’75, Humanitarian
David Klein, MD ’75, interim director of the Virginia B. Andes Volunteer Community Clinic, was featured on the front page of the Charlotte Sun for his humanitarian efforts. Drs. Klein and Mark Asperilla have been an active public health team in Charlotte County, Florida, particularly in the battle against hepatitis C. “Still going strong after all these years,” said Dr. Klein, a 2005 Babbott Award winner. “Downstate gave me my start.” #SUNYdownstate #hepatitusc #hepc #florida

Remembering Gerald Greenberg, MD ’59, Friend of Downstate
Died November 21, 2015 Gerald M Greenberg, MD, age 83, of Roslyn Heights, NY, died peacefully and gently and with a soft smile on his face, much as he had lived, on November 21, 2015 at home on hospice care, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Abby J. Greenberg, MD, ’59.
Jerry was born on October 22, 1932, the son of Emanuel D. Greenberg, DDS and Sayde Greenberg. He was raised in the Bronx, overlooking Yankee Stadium, and graduated from the University of

Summer research project: Involved Sprague Dawley rats to study 1) recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (commonly happens in thyroid surgery as an accident), and 2) occlusion of the larynx (laryngospasm) which is a cause of death during epileptic seizures.

Brooklyn Free Clinic Thanks Downstate Alumni Volunteers
In August, the Brooklyn Free Clinic recognized Downstate alumni volunteers for “dedication to student medical education and community service,” said Cleopatra McGovern, Chief Operating Officer. “We are so grateful to them for working with us.” The list of clinic volunteers includes former and current (and future) attendings at the BFC who are also Downstate alumni, as well as Douglas Lazarro, MD ’90, who offers patients free ophthalmology appointments at Downstate.
