Class Notes: August 2021

Sidney Winawer, MD' 56 has continued his research activities and recently was the senior author on the most recent report from the NYC Department of Health and NYC Colorectal Cancer Control Coalition which he initially chaired. Over an 18 year period they increased screening colonoscopy in NYC from 40% to 70% and eliminated prior racial disparities. Published in BMC Public Health 2021. The program has become a model for diverse urban populations.

Stratos G. Kantounis, MD' 58 Dr. Stratos G Kantounis, MD, FACS – on August 6, 2021, after a brief illness (not Covid related).

Stratos Kantounis was born in Brooklyn, NY to Greek Immigrant Parents on December 2, 1931. He lived in Brooklyn through his early 20s, & received his Bachelor of Science degree at CCNY, where he met the love of his life, Joanie - to whom he was married for 61 years until her passing in 2018. Stratos went-on to medical school at SUNY Downstate, & then completed his Internship & Residencies at Bellevue Hospital in NYC & then North Shore University Hospital, In Manhasset, NY.
