In Memoriam:*The Alumni Association recognizes in the “In Memoriam” section, not all alumni listed are recently deceased. As we become aware of the passing of our alumni we recognize them to provide their classmates with an update.

Mark I. Tafeen, MD’ 69 passed away on March 29,2020.

Fallen COVID-19 Heroes: In addition to our usual In Memoriam section, due to COVID-19, we are highlighting the alumni who have passed away providing direct care to the most heavily impacted populations during this pandemic.

*Stephan Kamholz, MD

“Stephan Kamholz, MD, chair of Medicine at Maimonides, passed away from coronavirus on June 11.  Dr. Kamholz was chair of Medicine at Downstate and Kings County for many years, and before that was our chief of pulmonology.

Dr. Kamholz was well known throughout the New York region and highly respected while here for his work with patients and students, and won several teaching awards from our Alumni Association. He recently served as a preceptor for one of our Class of 2020 Physician Assistant students. I know that there are many here at Downstate who still remember him fondly.”- Ellen Watson

*Though Dr. Kamholz was not a graduate of the College of Medicine he has had a profound impact on the Downstate community, including many alumni.
