Recent COM graduate (Class of 2018) Dr. Irini I. Youssef’s research paper has been rated top 10 from Cardiology Meetings. Along with her mentor Distinguished Teaching Professor, Samy McFarlane, MD, MPH, MBA, FACP, she presented an article on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation (A Fib). Since the presentation at the Cardiometabolic Health Congress annual meeting on October 4-7, 2017, there has been plenty of attention in the media.

SUNY Downstate Innovations:

July 11: M. Rami Nakeshbandi, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and Director of the  Internal Medicine Inpatient Private Service announced that Downstate has started implementing a new urine culture order set in order to reduce unnecessary ordering of urine cultures when there is little to no evidence of a urinary tract infection. This new initiative was created in hopes of helping the reduction rate of catheter associated urinary tract infections and unnecessary treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria, which may result in increased antibiotic resistance and C.difficile infections.
